Happy Father’s Day Drag Daddies!

Celebrating Drag Fathers on Father's Day: A Fun and Fabulous Tribute to Their Significance, Guidance, and Legacy

Father’s Day is here, and while most people are out buying ties and grilling tools, I’m over here thinking about a different kind of father – the fabulous, fierce, and utterly essential drag fathers. It’s time to give a standing ovation to the drag fathers who strut their stuff and mentor with style. Let’s dive into the topic of drag fatherhood and explore why these kings deserve all the love and praise today. Father’s Day is a great time to honor and celebrate the drag kings who have played significant roles in our lives as drag mentors, offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. This year, let’s shine a spotlight on the unique and vibrant drag fathers! Drag fathers hold a place of reverence and importance in the drag community. They are mentors, friends, and guiding lights for many aspiring drag artists. Let’s celebrate all drag fathers by exploring their significance, the importance of their representation, and the rich history behind their roles.

What the Heck is a Drag Father?

Okay, for those not in the know, let me break it down for you. A drag father isn’t just a mentor; he’s a life (drag) coach, makeup guru, and sometimes even a therapist rolled into one fabulous package. A newbie drag artist, with loose binding and clueless about contouring, can find a drag father that teaches them how to slay the stage… We are all lost when we start out. I leaned on the help of so many of the kings in my town to teach me how to glue hair on my face and what hair to use, and how to bind, and hacks on removing the tape… We really don’t celebrate drag king mentors enough.

Here in Peoria, IL, I've been super lucky to get help from some amazing drag kings as I dove into the drag scene. Miquel showed me the ropes with facial hair and even taught me a few slick dance moves. Victor Von Viscous encouraged my sobriety, provided support, and helped me perfect my contouring. Pluto Von Strapp guided me on binding techniques, and Elijah explained how to safely remove binding tape. Although my drag mentor is a queen, I am incredibly grateful for the experienced kings that allow me to learn from them as well, and I'm stoked to live in a place that totally vibes with drag kings just as much as queens!

Drag fathers do more than show you how to glue a sick beard… and a drag father is more than just a mentor; they are a pillar of support and a source of inspiration. In the drag community, a drag father takes on the responsibility of guiding new performers, often referred to as their drag children. This mentorship goes beyond teaching makeup techniques, performance skills, and stage presence. It encompasses emotional support, career advice, and hefty dose of tough love that transcends the stage. They’re the ones who’ll tell you, “child… stop using a yam as a packer.” (okay, that was my drag mother that told me that) They create safe spaces for their drag children to explore, experiment, and shine. It’s all about trust, respect, and a lot of glitter. Drag fathers provide a sense of belonging and acceptance, which is crucial in a community that has historically faced discrimination and marginalization. They create safe spaces for their drag children to explore their identities, express their creativity, and build their confidence. The relationship between a drag father and their children is built on trust, mutual respect, and love.

Why Drag Fathers Are the Real MVPs

Representation matters, people! In a world where LGBTQ+ folks often face rejection from their biological families, drag families step in to fill that void. Drag fathers represent the diversity and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.  They show us that family isn’t just about blood – it’s about the connections we make and the love we share. Plus, who else is going to teach you how to wear a chest plate without passing out?

The guidance of a drag father can be life-changing. Many drag artists owe their success and confidence to the mentorship of their drag dads. These fathers pass down the rich heritage and culture of drag, making sure the next generation knows their hirstory. They help their kids navigate the often cutthroat world of entertainment, dishing out advice on branding, marketing, how to handle those inevitable trolls, and dealing with rejection and criticism.

A Quick History Lesson on Drag Fathers

The concept of drag families, including drag fathers, goes way back to the early days of drag culture, when performers formed tight-knit communities to support one another. During the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, drag balls became the place to be, and drag families started to form. These families provided support and protection in a society that was often hostile and wasn’t exactly rolling out the rainbow carpet for LGBTQ+ folks.

Fast forward to the 1980s and 1990s, and the New York City ball scene was popping… it brought the concept of drag families into the mainstream. The documentary "Paris Is Burning" (a must-watch, by the way) showed the world just how vital drag families were in the lives of young queer folks, particularly LGBTQ+ people of color. Drag houses, led by house mothers and fathers, competed in various categories at balls, creating a fierce mix of competition and camaraderie. It’s imperative that we pay homage to the rich history as we embrace what drag has morphed into present day.

Drag Fathers: The Glue of the Drag Community

Drag fathers do more than teach you how to nail a triangle glide into cowboy hip thrust, and their influence of extends far beyond individual mentorship. They play a crucial role in preserving and advancing the art of drag. By passing down their knowledge, skills, and values, drag fathers ensure that the traditions and innovations of drag are carried forward… fostering unity and solidarity. They encourage their children to support one another, creating a network of performers who uplift and inspire each other. This sense of community is vital in a world where LGBTQ+ individuals often face adversity and discrimination.

The Modern Drag Father: A New Era of Mentorship

Today, drag fathers are navigating a new landscape. With social media and shows like "RuPaul’s Drag Race," drag has gone mainstream, but unfortunately this is mainly for the drag queens and drag mothers. This visibility does bring new opportunities and new challenges… drag kings have to be innovative and determined in order to gain recognition and representation… which is even harder with RuPaul’s Drag Race perpetuating the idea that drag is specific to a queen (outside of our woke queer spaces). Drag fathers now have a global platform with social media to share their wisdom and connect with their children. It’s mentorship in the digital age, and we need to take advantage!

Drag fathers can reach a wider audience by sharing their wisdom and experiences with aspiring performers around the world. They use social media to connect with their children, offer advice, and showcase their work. This digital age mentorship is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of drag fathers. I have learned so much from watching kings like Hugo Grrrl from New Zealand, and Adam All from the UK… I really enjoy their comedic style of drag, and would love to learn from them directly some day.

At the same time, the commercial success of drag has introduced new pressures. Drag fathers must navigate the complexities of the entertainment industry while staying true to the roots of drag culture. They face the challenge of balancing the demands of mainstream success with the need to preserve the authenticity and inclusivity of the drag community. They have to balance society’s demands with keeping it real and inclusive.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Drag Fathers

As we look to the future, the role of drag fathers is as crucial as ever. Their mentorship and guidance will continue to nurture the next generation of drag artists. Drag fathers will also lead the charge in promoting diversity and inclusivity, ensuring every performer, no matter their background, feels welcomed and valued. By fostering a sense of family and community, drag fathers help ensure that the art of drag remains vibrant and inclusive.

The future of drag fathers also involves embracing diversity and intersectionality. As the drag community continues to grow, it’s important to recognize and celebrate the contributions of drag kings, non-binary performers, and artists from diverse backgrounds. Drag fathers have a crucial role to play in promoting inclusivity and ensuring that all voices are heard.
