Celebrating Women’s History Month as a Drag King

March is not only about the arrival of spring (and my birth month) but also a time to celebrate Women's History Month—a moment to honor the indelible contributions of women throughout history. While this month typically spotlights the achievements of women in various fields, it also provides an opportunity to explore and celebrate diverse expressions of womanhood, including those outside traditional norms. As an AFAB drag king, I find Women's History Month to be a particularly poignant time for reflection and celebration of gender expression in all its forms.

Drag has long been intertwined with LGBTQ+ culture, providing a platform for individuals to explore and express their identities freely. While drag queens often take center stage, it's essential not to overlook the significance of drag kings in this art form. As a drag king myself, I see Women's History Month as an occasion to celebrate the unique contributions and experiences of those who identify as women and perform drag.

One of the most beautiful aspects of drag is its ability to challenge societal norms and expectations regarding gender. Drag kings, like drag queens, use performance as a means of subverting gender roles and expectations. Through elaborate costumes, makeup, and performances, some drag kings create personas that embody masculinity in diverse and often unexpected ways.

Celebrating Women's History Month as a drag king allows me to reflect on the historical struggles and triumphs of women while also celebrating the fluidity and complexity of gender. It's a reminder that womanhood is not a monolithic experience but rather a variety of identities, expressions, and experiences.

Moreover, Women's History Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality and the importance of intersectionality within feminist movements. As an AFAB drag king, I acknowledge the struggles faced by women, particularly those who are marginalized due to factors such as race, sexuality, disability, or socioeconomic status.

I seek to amplify the voices of all women, including those whose experiences may be overlooked or silenced. Drag, with its emphasis on performance and spectacle, provides a powerful platform for storytelling and advocacy. Whether through lip-sync performances, theatrical productions, or community events, drag kings have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on issues affecting women and marginalized communities. There are some prominent and successful kings that do just that. Landon Cider comes to mind with his advocacy for Drag King representation and for support in Palestine.

As I reflect on Women's History Month this year, I am reminded of the resilience, strength, and creativity of women throughout history. I am proud to stand alongside my fellow drag performers in celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of womanhood in all its forms. Together, we continue to push boundaries, challenge expectations, and create spaces where everyone—regardless of gender identity—can express themselves authentically and without fear.

In the spirit of Women's History Month, let us celebrate the past, honor the present, and continue to work towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all. As a drag king, I am proud to be a part of this ongoing journey towards greater understanding, acceptance, and celebration of gender diversity.

Happy Women's History Month to all, whether you wear a crown, a wig, or both. Here's to the women who came before us, the ones who stand beside us, and the ones who will follow in our footsteps. Let us continue to make history together.
